I remember Paul talking about giving us the ability to paint ship parts in the designer.  I find it hard to believe that it is a viable option with the current planned release date, but maybe as a compromise they could try to hook up the themes into the designer so you could customise individual designs that way.  Not sure if anyone else would be interested in that though.

I know I would be. But then, I sort of find the existing colour palettes limiting as well, so I'd love to be able to custom define new ones and stuff as well. I don't know if that's in the works or even feasible, but the current palette choices seem somewhat limiting to me right now.

Quoting Rand Johnson,

Quoting jmccrea,

Rand...have you found out anything yet?  Would setting the ships to User make them show up so i can use them?  Where would I do that?  So want to use your ships, but i have no clue what to do.

The issue was indeed fixed. All my ships show up now, shinker or not.

I am going to put a zip file together. All you need to do is open it and copy or move ship design files to your designs folder in C:/mydocuments/mygames/GalCiv3/designs.

Open and load game,  ships should all appear in ship designer and shipyards.

Thanks so much!!  Cant wait...should i delete out the old ships then from designs?

Have them in my folders and nothing coming up...wonder what im doing wrong?  Sigh...i noticed alot more ships too!  Which makes it worse haha

Okay update...I see the ships now, but not with a custom race.  They will not show up even when i make a new one.  I wonder if it has to do with selecting a race's ships.  When i play the humans, they are there, which is awesome, but not sure how to work around this.

Update 2- Ok found a work around.  I play a game as humans, saved the ships i research out as templates, then when i make a new faction boom they appear as templates and then I can change them.  Now i just have to figure out how to research all the techs and ill have them all haha

They don't work with custom factions. I found out the hard way too. They will show in a regular game using choosing Terrans as your race, Stardock still has much work to do for us to create our own races.

I just hit a bug with pirates in the game. See my thread on Steam forums.

Bugs, bugs, bugs....WTH?? Oh wait...lol its a beta!!  I have seen peps screaming about how they want their money back and im like..peps...its a beta!!  LOL  Granted none of us have done that and i think great progress is being made!  Still, im looking forward to seeing your ships and ill do a play thru as Terrans and then use them later!  Now if we could only change SFX and the visual looks into actual ST sounds...uberness would ensure!!

I'm not gonna scream for a refund, lol, but I'm soooo disappointed that light/window colors are still broken in the ship designer (in saved games, not new games), especially with custom races now.  I'm sad. :(

I hear you.

I'm having to completely redo my original ship set to fix it. You may already know how to avoid the issue in future, but just in case, for anyone reading.

To avoid many possible issues when designing large numbers of ships.

1) Always build off of one ship component. Do not attach multiple components to your original cube. (necessary for any big animations you might want later)

2) Start a game, press "`" type "unlock". This gives you all techs, then proceed to design your ships and save them as templates. If you need to stop and come back... start a whole new game and repeat. You cannot trust a save game, you will often find parts you start to add have a new/blank color.

3) Recommend a naming convention for grouped parts, slightly different than your ship designs. For example "TS-C-Bridge" is a TS component. Whereas "TS-Small 01A" is the first small template ship for the same race. This will help group things easily in your design folder.

4) Before saving a ship or component as a template, always build a copy. Clipping errors, and visual artifacts because parts are too close together, will not show in the editor typically.

5) Good floating dimensions for ships is a Y up/down Oscillate of 4.0 with speed 1.0 or -1.0

6) Currently in order to delete a template, I'm having to open the designs folder and remove the offending template, WHILST THE GAME IS RUNNING. This is new since Beta 5 and quite inconvenient. Crashing after exiting a game after doing this is common... but otherwise I find the templates reappear if I only delete them when the game is not running.

If your the type of person that wants to design ships as they play, I feel for you, your going to run into the coloring bug. Best to just learn to sit down and build out an entire ship set. Just my 2 Cents.

Sweet fighter Sisko needs to be in our contest at the GC-SD.  My latest ship, a massive carrier.

That fighter makes me think transformers... don't know why... but its just... more than meets the eye?

As for the Carrier Edladner, first I'll ask... is it called Brimstone? Because wow is that a lot of red! I love it, its very cool.

I have mostly finished my redux of my first terran ship set. I had started that set not knowing the ins and outs of the editor and various bugs, so a fresh start was needed to rid myself of the issues. I think its all the better for it, but I wouldn't want to do it again.

Now that videos shows everything, but at 2:13 minutes, is my absolute favorite, the Large Carrier. The ship itself, won't win a beauty contest but...

I decided to try and actually make a ship that housed the fighters internally and give it some interior decorations. For a first attempt I think it worked splendidly. The problem is scale. There was simply no way to make it work with anything but a couple of bombers internally without drastically reducing the scale of the bombers/fighters and that would clash with everything else. So instead, I decided that Fighters were mounted externally (something I do a lot with my other designs), and that only two heavy bombers were kept internally. The Fighters need to react quickly and launch, but the bombers require more prep and have much shorter operational times and thus require the bays for maintenance.

One of the few designs for this ship set that I haven't started is a Huge Carrier, and I'm hoping to get that to show off 5-6 bays.

Really appreciate any feedback on any of these.

Very, very nice...love the look of them all.  Funny too, because the smaller ships remind me of the dropship in Aliens and the bigger ones, remind me of the Sulaco from Aliens.  I think one adjustment would be color...I mean some type of Black would be awesome haha.  Love the carrier with the bay doors opening and the fighters on the outside.  NICE!!

I actual did want some animation in it on the wings, but due to the repeating nature it would look like it was flapping.

It would be nice to have a "once" animation that just ran an animation once.  It would make the pre-engagement part of the battle viewer more interesting if you had ships appearing to prepare for combat ala X-Wings with s-foils locking in position.

Was working on a small ship today and realised afterwards I had selected a tiny hull by accident.  It would be nice if we could port designs across hull sizes.  Anyway, here is the Combat Assault Platform or CAP...I was struggling with what to name it.

Thanks Gauntlet!

I was trying to figure out how to go about designing my armada :)

I am relatively new here, so just getting my feet wet so to speak and wasn't sure how to go about this...

Great thread though, a lot of amazing designs all around!

I like that fighter a lot, good work, though I wonder is that last picture just three in a fleet?

@Edladner

As usual, nice retro look. Though Its getting hard to judge ships in screen shots with that color scheme, its very dark and obscures some details. That could just be me and my weak and feeble organic eyes.

For myself, and for the GalCiv 3 Fighter Design Contest I decided to take my first real stab at an organic ship. Previously I've made some robo-insect ships, but now with the Iconian parts, well, organic is WAY easier to achieve. This guy is called a Neophyte and virtually every part is animated a little to make it look... breathing.

Well, I don't normally design fighters but I'm going to try my hand at a few.  This first attempt uses one of the "hidden" parts (Relic Model 5) as the main building block because it seemed like such an interesting part to work with.  It also uses Promethion Model_01 for the cockpit, another "hidden" part.   Generally, I like simple, clean designs.  This one uses just 9 parts.  Designed as the Terrans but probably would look better under a different player.  Feedback welcome.

@ Gauntlet03

Thank you very much, I'm quite happy with how it turned out. The last picture is just three in a fleet I haven't gone into the animations much as its been a while. I was making some small and medium ships too with an old part of mine from beta 2 and it causes the ships to turn out a lot smaller and sometimes glitches so I have to remake them :(

I agree about the black and red colorscheme, not only is it hard to judge but its hard to build when everything is so dark. I wanted to do a red and white color scheme but I don't like the white presets.

A non-traditional fighter design.  We finally have enough parts to try some crazy designs.  I really wish they would fix mirroring when saving something as a custom part.  This design came out too small in the game, but I didn't know it until I'd finished it.  I'd love to the scale the whole design up, and even use it for larger ships, but don't know if that's even possible.
