Unit Design - Hide/Unhide?

I've been enjoying the game for a few days now, and just recently started to use the Design Units feature after getting my bearings. What exactly does the Hide/Unhide checkbox on the list of units do? I can see that if I check Hide it removes that unit from the list of trainable units. Is it purely for ease of selecting units from an organized list in case you make a lot, or does it do something more grand like prevent the AI from using units marked as hidden when you let the CPU use your custom faction?

I hope for the latter, but if not... consider it a feature request?

Its only for helping you sort out the old designs.

If you design your own and you click retire, they will still be saved for future games, AND for the AI to use against you.

I have a question about this. I've retired units before because I made a mistake. How do I get rid of them so the AI doesn't use them? I typically do so by clicking the "Edit" button, which actually creates a new unit instead of changing the previous one. But the old one, which has the same name, doesn't show up in the folder with all the other ones.

You have to locate them manually in the folder where the game saves its designs...
Documents/My Games/Fallen Enchantress/Units

From in there you can delete the items.
You can also edit them in notepad and change specific items (if you have the patience to figure out what is what), and you can compile all your units in 1 file (copy paste) and share them with you're buddies or just share between the machines.

Hint: The AI can really use some more unit designs, so deleting them all will cripple it slightly.

That's what's confusing though. I've tried looking in that location and I don't see any of my retired designs. Is it because the updated design has the same name?

I would imagine that they are properly deleted then? Is the computer still using the units? I've made a couple units that I didn't care for and have since retired and I don't see them in that folder either.

What I did find in that folder however was 2 old Sovereigns that I deleted using the right click-delete context at the Sovereign selection screen. One thing I wish for at the moment is a proper way inside the game to manage/delete custom Factions, Sovereigns and Units. For someone who is a bit OCD like me, it would be fantastic.

Sounds odd, I haven't been trying this "same name" thing as you have which might have an effect.
I do know my old retired designs like "Stick Em" is still in my folder (Its a scouting unit without the scout ability, I needed to quickly produce due to a special circumstance).

I will try playing around with it today

I am mistaken and you are correct!, I do have some feeling that it worked differently some time ago though ...
I AM able to have several units with the same name though.

In that case I think there should also be a hide button for units so I can clean up the list of available trainable units...
