There are a lot of under the hood changes that most will not see unless they are tech savvy. but every time a new version of windows comes out we hear it's just this version with a facelift.

Don't we all do it. we all upgrade to what ever version of windows then come to WinCustomize to skin it or add functions it does not have.

I keep reading about how windows 8 looks so bad we have to come here to fix it. Yep we do. and we did on windows 3. 95. 98. ME. 2000. XP. Vista. 7. and now 8.

if an OS. did everything or looked the way everyone wanted then no one would need stardock.

 

Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to sell windows 8 to anyone if you don't like it hey good for you I skipped XP. I ran 2k till I could not run it any more.

Well said.

Everything gets 'old' in time. Why have so many skins if one would do for all time. Some like Windows just as it is.

Even games get stale after a while. Windows 'Blue' will be the same. Linux ditto.

There will never be an os, skin or program that everyone is going to like straight out of the box.

So I say 'kudos to Stardock or anyone else that give us options and changes'.

If it was easy to just make the changes yourself then Stardock and anyone else would not be around.

Remember, Microsoft didn't target the business community with Windows 8, it is trying to woow the desktop and laptop users to tablets and getting used to the idea of cloud computing. Businesses are on the XP and 7 platform. That is why they plan support for Windows 7 until 2020. Most all will be on 7 way before then.

Tablets are a fad that'll blow over sooner rather than later. They're practically useless at anything but playing simple games and social networking. Unless forced by circumstances i don't see average joe user to fork out for cloud computing, nor do i seen any practical use for it for them.

As gadgets go they're attractive. But i got so tired of lugging them around i just put one in every room and use them as either entrainment center front ends or smart tv add-ons.

Beyond that i haven't really found something useful to with them, since outside in the sun they are unreadable and finding a good signal is practically impossible so you have to tether it to your phone costing you a fortune in charges.

You must be running some seriously hardcore stuff to really notice a difference between 7 and 8. Human response time just is always slower than modern computers. No way on earth anyone can notice the marginal speed improvements in code execution in the usual standard applications one uses for daily average computing.

OK, for one example:

 

   I run two GFX cards and 4 monitors. 16 GB RAM. (tested with a triple core CPU, I now have a 6 core, haven't rechecked.)

   On 7, if I run a different dream on each of the 4 monitors, I get jerkyness, and erratic response trying to do anything else on my PC.

 

   On 8, same machine, same hardware, I can run 4 different dreams, watch a video, or play a game, even skin in photoshop. All at the same time, and see no performance loss. None.

 

That's just one example that stands out.

Only reason I fool with 8 is that I got it for $14.99.

I spend that on sodas in a week.

In answer to this, I need no resource manager. It's like driving a jalopy, then getting into a sports car, I can feel/see the performance difference.

Yeah, that's real average joe.

 All GFX related, so as i thought. You fell for the scrap aero trick. They made it less functional and for some people that is an advantage.

I make do with one gfx card and 2 monitors and have no issues running different dreams. (depending on the dream ofcourse) 

I stand by my earlier observations.

Dear Petrossa it has nothing to do with the (cosmetic nature of windows8)

I respect TH to the fullest the test was done in sept 2012 they also mention that in some cases windows8 is a bit faster in others a bit slower than win7 non the less boot is faster and programs got improved like the taskmanager the boost however is real and they also mention that some of the drivers can be improved for windows8 and some were not even win8 ready at that time they also say that there is puffer for windows8 to be even faster while windows7 reached its limits in some cases therefore its not just makeup...
Also running different dreams on two monitors is not that impressive considering that you can do that with an onboard graphic chip(i3+) easy its more the processing power that is important

petrossa, with all due respect, I didn't "fall" for anything. I kinda resent the implication. I am not stupid.

 

It works better. Why? I don't care why, I'm just happy that it does.

 

It's this simple, it actually is, so don't fall for less.

 

I do something on 7 with so/so results. I do the exact same thing on 8 with awesome results. Argue with that simple FACT.

 

If you want to argue that the latter isn't better, or that I have been tricked, then go argue it with a stupid person, which I am not.

The Metro-style PC Settings section is dramatically expanded and includes virtually every Windows setting that was previously part of the desktop Control Panel.

.. whatever that exactly means in detail .. Still, Aero Glass has not (yet?) been mentioned to be back in 8.1.

Absolutely ridiculous is that the Start BUTTON will be back, but WITHOUT the Start MENU .. WTF ???? Here's your milk bottle (you asked for it) - it's intended to be empty with  no milk in it .. OMG ..

Who's pissed now  Even if the article is bogus the description of how large companies work is right on the nail. Anyone working in one knows this. They are filled with underbosses fighting for the top, and absolutely against any change of status quo.

The mere fact it took MS 30 years to produce an OS that is working most of the time as it should is proof in itself.

And i you're happy with a slight of hand 'speed increase' by scrapping most of the GFX layer (in fact dressing down the os) well, good luck to you. What strikes as very weird why bother buying stuff to make it behave like the old one again. 

It's really beyond me, this is worse then the morons standing in line for an iPhone. How deluded can you get to pay for a degraded OS with hardly any (if at all) significant improvements which you have to then fill up with replacement software to make it look and behave like the one you had before and worked fine?

Oh, great news, W8.1 allows to you have 3 (three) apps on screen at once! Wow. Now that's a major improvement. 3 apps at once. Sheesh.
