I think the auto-downloading of custom maps, scenarios akin to some of the campaigns in SW Empire at War, expanding the diversity of the game (more planet types, wonder structures, ship customization, etc...things that make the game less nearly identical to Trinity), and a map layout preview feature should all be higher priorities than a ladder system.
I'm not a competitive player. A ladder system is the last thing I would really care about. I actually think organized ladders and ranking systems are something detrimental to many games. They cause people to play for rank and points. It completely turned me off to several franchises including Starcraft. It's not fun to get hit with "cheese tactics" every single game.
