I was taking a stab in the dark. I saw that the image count layer was a variable, and I thought since I was using two layers at each part of the whole start menu, this looked like the most likely place to make that setting.

should actually read 'frame' count in SKS, because that is what it's really referring to. It has nothing to do with layers.
The 'layers stacked vertically' checkbox is used for when you have more than one frame in your image and they are stacked instead of being side by side.
While we're on that subject, and before I go too deeply, am I in anyway "cheating" by using either bits of other people's photography, or by not making the graphics 100% on my own?
Jafo is the best person to answer that question, he seems to be the local expert on the subject. However, it's always best to make your own, that way there is no question as to whether it's ok or not. It really depends on where you get the images, and what sort of permissions you need to use them (if any). I know there's gotta be a thread around here on the subject....
