Why are you idiots starting in the middle of the battlefield?
They're French.
If there are enough enemy units and not enough space for them, they seem to pop up in strange places. It's especially common/irritating on city tactical maps, which are already crowded with fences and buildings.

I along with several others have suggested they allow army placement before the battle begins. Seems to me that would be the best solution.
