Icons not working in Objectdock when deleted from desktop

When I get rid of my music folder from the desktop (the old icon), the one in the object bar just lights up when i click it.  When i bring the old icon out again, it lets me use it in the dock.  I want my desktop completely cleared besides the dock, but how can I if it won't let me with certain icons?

Dock icons are links.  If you delete where the dock is pointing to it has no where to go, right?

If your desktop icons are shortcuts to other items, drag those items from their "real" locations to the dock.  Then you can delete your desktop icons.

What icons are you trying to remove?

Well, something like my Music folder is made by me.  I don't know where i would grab that from, besides the folder I made to put them in.  Painter 9.5 is another one I use frequently.  If i get rid of the shortcut on the desktop, the shortcut in the dock doesn't work.  If i were to grab where it says Corel painter from the programs list and put that in the dock...would that work?  There's more than one item in that folder.

It's only certain ones like that.  My photoshop shortcut in the dock worked when I deleted the one on the desktop.  I don't get why it chooses certain programs and folders, and not others, or all.  Am confused. I do appreciate the feedback though,so if you have anything more to add feel free.

Check something for me

In the  dock properties, go to Misc. Options and tell me if the 5th item is checked or not.  Its the "when a shortcut is added . . ." one.

Also, what OS?  What version of OD?  What build?

Okay, when I go there, the " when a shortcut is ran..." option is number 2 for me, not five.  Five is "slow down the minimize/restore animation when..." option.  Neither of them are checked at the moment.  I clicked on option 2, and and then put the music folder in the trash.  Clicking on the music icon still didn't open anything, so I dragged the music file out of the trash, and it worked fine.  I only downloaded the dock about a week ago, if that (can't tell where to check what verion it is).  So i don't thik it's an outdated version.  My OS is Vista.  Build?

I really do appreciate the help.

OD Free or plus?  Version can be found by going to dock propertieds and then "about OD"

When I get rid of my music folder from the desktop
End of quote

I clicked on option 2, and and then put the music folder in the trash.
End of quote

are you talking about a shortcut to the folder or the folder itself?

sounds like you are deleting the folder to which you want ODock to point a shortcut to which it can't if you delete it.

if what's you keep deleting from your desktop is a shortcut to the folder, then Z's 1st reply will work

you can find the folder and drag it to the dock

you can open the folder and copy the address and paste that into dock entry properties

you can make to dock shortcut point to a specific file in the folder then edit the link line in ODock properties to remove the specific and leave the general folder

Thanks, that worked.  I had tried that before and it hadn't.  I tried it after i saw your post and it still wouldn't work, but it must have some glitch where it doesn't work the first time only.  I just had to try one more time ( double for anything not willing to work in the dock) and it usually works after thae second time.  So it's basically try, fail, try again and presto!  This stuff needs to get ironed out.   Thanks again.
