Demigod beta 1a feedback

for what it's worth

Let me preface by saying I like the idea behind Demigod. Let me also say that I understand that this is a engine test beta where Stardock has gone out of its way to say that it's not supposed to be fun. With those 2 things in mind here is my report.

- It's october. The game is supposed to come out in february. That gives you 2 or 3 months to finish. No way.

- Replyability is very low. How are you going to fix this? Waterfall is fun for a few times but you play it a few times, you're done. There's very little strategy involved.

- There's not much to do. I have a demigod with up to 4 powers that i get to use one every minute or so. The rest of the time I'm just kind of walking him around. I'm glad the game isn't a clickfest but there's not much to do.

- There's not much skill involved in the game. what seperates an uber player from a newbie? There's so little strategy in place. What is the plan for this?

- no enough variance with the demigods. They look different. They act different. But if there's only going to be 8 to 12 of them, there's still not nearly enough to do with them to make them different. I just buy items with my money and walk around doing stuff. what are you going to do about this?

- What are you going to do to make the maps have more strategic variance? It's like Pac-man where I do the same thing and the other guy does the same thing. There's only one or two logical choices to make in a strategy.

Hope this helps.

- The game isn't coming out in February

- Even in 1.0 and 1a there is a big difference between one player who knows what they are doing and one player who doesn't.  This stacks exponentially when you get a team who knows what's up vs. one that doesn't.  Sorta like playing a pub game of COD4 and saying that you can kill a bunch of people, so there isn't much difference between a nub and a pro.

- Also, the disclaimer is a nice touch, but maybe you should wait until Beta 2 before bringing out the big guns of disdain, no? (edit: wow, sorry for the snark)

- I agree there.  October now and this is supposed to be out in Febuary?  But apparently it's been pushed back further to "spring" which i think means at LEAST march.  Hopefully it's late spring and we can have a AAA game.

-There is going to be 10 maps.  And I kinda like the maps.  I just wish they had some objects that blocked visibility.

-I agree there.. there needs to be much more ariaty to builds.

-Definitely. The game is so easy to master it isn't funny.  It feels so unprecise with both movement and targetting, and so much other stuff with the UI.

-They could be different enough to be fine with only 8.  The game could be great with 8.  It just won't be great with 8 without TONS of work done with their skills.

-They will have different flags and stuff.

Yeah I am getting a little worried about the "depth" of this game as well.

Well i think it could be great given a few months.  It just all depends.

remember people, theres not much out in terms of the game, id say (in my own opinion) theres 40%, if that, of the game being shown.

- you mention strategy a lot, you need to work together with your team, if your only playing bots, then yes its boring, they dont listen to you... (off note: I beat the AI 1v3 as unclean beast, so its pretty easy to take them)

- Once true online games start poping in, THEN we see what really happens with strat and skill use.

-more skills are not always better, I feel that people tend to be like sheep: one person finds the best way to use something, then everyone fallows. Heres and Example from DotA (OMG DOTA! FORUM TROLLS INCOMING!). Most heroes of the 91 have a certain build you have to go because its the best, and if you want to win, OR at least thats what most people think... I never usually go what people say (hell, ive actually carried a team as Techies cuz I had the RIGHT build, not the best, this includes items and abilities)

I say this above because most people have found out how to 'break' each Demigod into trying to be the best in all situations. Another example, but from Demigod, in BETA 1, people always went for RooKs hammer smash and Rock Roll, I went upgrades and towers, I tried different builds on each Demigod. (I went lifesteal on Unclean once, RooK too, wasnt effective on RooK, but UB was pretty decent.)

its not so much that you HAVE to go for that one skill build and item build. Look at what you opposition is doing and reply in kind. You have to think out side the box in order to get better at a game, so adding more abilities when not trying different builds (item/abilities) in different situations can hamper you judgement of the game. In othe words: Before saying to change something or add more things, try to find differences in how to play, making you better, have more fun, and really figure out how deep this game is. Maybe if people really communicated in games (when I play its just fun/trash talk) you might find that some wacky build helps out more as a team build then a one demigod WTFPWNAGE wrecking crew...

I'll withold judgment until beta 2. I think the game is fun but I am seeing the potential of what I imagine will be in a finished game.

The thing is that the game isnt all being shown in these betas, the only concern there that im worried about at the moment is the one about not doing much, there's heaps of high lvl strat(items, cooperation, flags etc.) but at the tactics level i think its a bit shallow, i dont want a click fest but something that takes a decent bit of skill at the tactical level is required imo.

We'll probably see more tactical when we get generals into the fray ....
