Which two-byte font?
You shouldn't have any problems with japanese as such (theoretically, not a dev here), but stick to unicode. (UTF-8 or maybe UTF-16)

Just tried and UTF-8 does not work :( Instead, it just displays "String not Found" in game. Conclusion - 2 byte language mod will not work.
