An essential part of any real time strategy game, albeit a mmorsg, is a variety of unit classes. It is extremely boring to sit and watch two hordes of just swordmen cutting and slicing without any real strategy. Thus, Society should not only have Swordmen and Archers, but pikemen, calvary, and maybe even catapults and other siege equipment. And the mention of siege equipment brings up another essential issue:
Defenses. What type of defenses will be available to us? The age of empires classic auto firing towers, walls, castles, trebushes, maybe even moats. The available siege equipment will naturally depend on what defenses one is able to build, such as seige towers and ladders for tall walls, battering rams for short walls and gates, catapults for general destruction of property

, and of course uruks carrying explosive bombs (I'm kidding bout the uruks, calm down).
Back to the topic of general unit classes:
1. Effectiveness and combat ability based on certain researchables, weapons, experience, moral, and maybe even presence of a leader (If society does include ability to create a leader that can be present in battles. Of course not able to take out a army by itself, but maybe certain benefits of moral and such to other units if nearby, or in the army. Another interesting use of a leader is if it was geared to be useful economically, or even improve research rate. )
