Construction Styles

Okay, I know we all have our build strategies. But, in my case, I have several. I refer to them as construction styles. Basically, it's a template for how you are building the ship. For example, with my Terran fleets, Succubus-style ships tend to be fast ships with little weapons or armor, often able to simply outrun enemy fleets. Hellfire-style ships are weapons heavy, Dis-style ships tend to try to balance weapons and armor, and Demon Lord-style ships always use the most advanced technology I have.

This means that, depending on type, you could be facing totally-different styles of combat. Against a Hellfire ship, you need have good damage protection. A Succubus-style ship you merely need to engage in combat. A Dis ship you have to watch, as it will use both weapons and armor to its advantage. And Demon Lord ships are quite adaptive.

Just wondering if any of you have similar strategies.

I'm a very imperial fellow, big hulls, big guns, fast engines, and protection be damned (unless of course I've managed to pillage some decent tech from my fellow cultures).

Smalls: stopped using them in 1.2 they just don't have the staying power to make them useful anymore.

Mediums: Grunt ship does most of the fighting, light defense with a balance between speed and weapons.

Large: Fast Raider mostly engines, LS, as much armour has I can fit and one weapon. I use this to hunt and kill transports, starbases, freighters & constructors while avoiding combat with the AI main units. (used to use a 1 attack cargo hull in this role V1.0)

So far its worked quite well with one ship being able to take out 5 to 6 escort + transport and can generally take out most starbases. Its incredible how much damaged you can do with 2 or 3 on these running amok in the enemy rear areas.

Huge: when I build these I run them fleets of 5 or 5 which do over a 1000 damage and can take a beating its truly awesome the fire power these have.

No matter which ship type the keys is to keep them all upgraded, in my current game (Crippling, Gigantic) I'm around midgame and I'm up version 10 on my mediums, version 6 on large and version 3 on Huge.

Its expensive but when you have a military rating of 50 and are under attack by the Dregin and Arceans and are not only holding your own but slowly pushing them back it worth it.

It is very expensive to upgrade a ship. Unless the ship has levelled up a lot (less likely with v1.2) or you have money to burn, it is better just to build a new one.

By midgame I always have money to burn and as long as it not a real drastic upgrade its not that expensive.

Example an upgrade for mediums cost 206BC x 30 mediums = 6180 bc I generate that in 1 to 3 turns with the sliders, besides what else am I gonna spend it on.

A few more points on upgrading -- a lot of ships grow in power with exp and keep that when upgraded. Also upgrading completely repairs a ship -- I usually wait to upgrade till a ship has damage unless i really need the upgrade. And upgrading ships can vary a lot depending on the exact design -- not a bad idea to try a few things with the design and see what keeps the cost down if needed. Also upgrading is the best use of excess cash as best as I can see except maybe rush buying a Galactic Achievement or Trade Good.

Okay, time for size updates:

Tiny: Scoutships and Hellfire Darts. Now, I call them darts instead of fighters for a reason. Mainly, using them on capital ships is like throwing darts at a tank.

Small: Frigates, early armed troop transports, the occasional scoutship, and the occasional improved constructor. Tend to be either Hellfire or Succubus types, with a few Dis and Demon Lord thrown in.

Medium: Battlecruisers, armed troop transports, the occasional early Lord of War (fleet-leading capital ship with troop carrying capacity), and armed surveyors (I play on the largest maps I can). All construction styles.

Large: Destroyers, Interceptors, middling Lord of War, and the occasional late-game armed colony ship.

Huge: Battleplates, late-game Lord of War, and the Four Horsemen (four-ship fleet of terror and destruction I like to use to scout out enemy territory).

Cargo: Colony ships, troop transports, constructors, surveyors, and the occasional Pea Shooter (heavily-armed Hellfire-style capital ship intended for making distractionary strike runs into enemy territory while my main fleet works on capturing planets).
