Which Race Will Be Best Under V1.2

???

Everyone has their favourite race. I know it's not a good idea to start off this topic with such a blanket statement but I guess, in the majority of cases, this is true. Arguments can be made all day about one race being better than the other for various reasons but it seems that the Yor are very popular on this forum, largely due to their miniturisation, logistical and industrial bonuses and tech. Under 1.2 things are going to change.

Simultaneous combat will emphasise the need for balanced ships i.e. fewer all weapon/engine ships and more defences all round. The Yor will still be strong because the miniturisation allows extra hull space for more components. The Drengin can add fewer weapons to their ships and still outshoot any other race allowing defenses to fitted with room to spare. The Drath will be laughing, after all, if tactics becomes more defensive the value of that 50% defence bonus rockets.

The question is this, what happens to everyone else? the Humans certainly wont benefit, neither will the thalans, the torians or the iconians. Obviously effort was directed at balancing the races in version 1.0 so surely this update will ruin all that hard work unless some hefty bonuses are dished out to other civs.

I can't remember which bonuses the other races get. I'm sure someone else can help.

I rarely play races but I think I played the wrong ones... didn't know they got anything as sweet as +50% defense.

The drath will improve but for some reason the ai does not do well with the drath. The other races all seem to do better then drath. They are almost always the first or second race gone in all my games. This upgrade will help but they will still get the boot early. I have no idea why they do bad but they just do.

Actually custom race is the worst possible race to play as. ALL the other civs, if you clear their bonuses, get inherant rascial bonuses along with 10 points. So the custom race is actually the WORST race.

Funny, though, you can change anything about the game races, the picture, the names, the appearance. So playing the custom race is completely pointless thing that only a newb should consider.

didn't know they got anything as sweet as +50% defense.

No, but you can give them that and keep the races inert, for example, 25% miniturization bonus.

Dont play as customs, your nerfing yourself if you do.

Um, no. The Customs get 25 soldiering and 20 loyalty. Research the various +Soldiering techs and you very rarely, if ever, have to defend your worlds, not even the ones with only 5 billion people. It also makes invading others rather easy.

I think Drath are best now, and I think they're getting better. Customs aren't getting inherently better, but they're still my second pick, as are they now. That's for humans, though--I'll reserve judgement on the AI until I see it. Also, I tend to build up before aggressing the other races, so the miniaturization races (Thalans and Yor) don't do anything for me because of the cap (I don't really need the loyalty, and if I did I'd play Custom).

I'm not too sure if you're right about the computer playing poorly as the drath. I still have nightmares of my puny 7 laser ships fighting their 30 shield frigates..... At one time or another I've been steam rollered by almost all of the races if they get a decent starting position and I'm on too high a difficulty setting. Observations from my own games tell me that the drengin, arceans and alterians are strong. Admittedly a poor starting location can destroy any hope of them winning. Will V1.2 see other computer controlled races becoming increasingly powerful and dominant in 9 player games?

I know there is a way of doing hot seat multiplayer but is there a way of getting the computer to play a few games on it's own? If so you could leave your computer on over night and run 10 or 20 games and see if any race is inherantly stronger than the others.

Wow, you really seem to know so much about this game...oh, except the inherent bonuses that custom races get. Pfft!

Custom Race rocks and is one of the top 5 reasons why I bought the game. No where else can I have my kats in space.

I like the fact I get a bonus to attack also and a small loyalty bonus, as I watch numerous screens in the productio arena I can see other races when they have turned up the "power" on production and having good morale, good loyalty allows me to match them in the production field.

Now if this makes no sense to you, and it just may not, I admit I am totally fubar today on legal pharmaceuticals. But from my bling you can see, custom is the way to go for me.

I'm a Yor man personally. They suck at diplomacy but then again I don't do that. The Yor suit my style. I always switch tech trading off, and I love to go on the attack early. They rock at combat and their bonuses are best in the early game. The change to combat rules has not swayed me much in terms of attack/defence... What it has done is improved the chances of the fleet of the small/tiny ships against the large/huge single ship. The inate logistics of the Yor are second to none. So it makes them even stronger.
