Snowball

I've been having a problem ever since I set the AI to tough (with the beta AI). That is, I build up a military, but someone declares war eventually. I fight it out, and win, but by the time I'm done my military is pretty softend up. Suddenly, a couple races that were at "friendly" give me double negitives for "military strength", and declare war on me. As I then fight them off, my military continues to go down, and soon everyone is attacking me.

So, the point of the post is, any good tips on avoiding the snowball effect? It annoys me to no end that races I had been helping suddenly pounce the second I'm struggleing.

On a side note, when I first encounteered this, I barely maintained relations with the Torians, and used them as a shield between me and the ever more hostile galaxy. They did well, using the tech and otehr help (starting proxy wars for them, etc), and had about 80% of the galaxy (at war, so no culture victory). Suddenly, they gave in and declared war on me for my lack of military strength as well (after I put them in charge). So, I did some back alley deals, before you know it the Drenjin went form the weakest economy and military to taking over the whole galaxy. All the otehr races that had picked on me either got conqured or (ironically) surrendered to me. If I'm going down, I'm taking the whole glaxy of jerks with me!

I usually lease more ships than usual if I get into a tough war. I tend to replace some buildings with factories to build military ships faster and lease them when they reach a favorable price.

Since I dont play the beta, I cannot say with any certainty if my advice is particularly applicible.

First, its probably never a good idea to let any AI sit and do nothing for any length of time. It may be expensive for either tech or for money, but its never a bad idea to pay off an AI to get involved in a war. If they are busy in their own wars, then they wont be as eager to take a shot at you.

Considering that, you may want to consider paying the other AI's to help you go after the AI your fighting. Chances are that if your becoming vulnerable, your opponent is likely to be worse off. The best time to do this would be when you start having a difficult time finding any of their surviving fleets. If you set the table for them, the other AI's should will jump in on a free dinner.

I would not be surprised if at least a few of the AI's are coded to let you or someone else do the heavy lifting.

One thing you may do is to get the strongest powers involved in your initial conflict, overproduce alot of ships at the start, make sure your ships are technological superior and try to develop 'hero' ships, keep a cache of tech and money to payoff your second attackers.

Just kill everybody. It works, and it's fun

Research the full diplomacy tree and build a spin control center. Then park your most powerful warships in orbit. No one will want to mess with you. Also, as above posters mentioned, pay the other races to fight each other.

Thanks for the tips, I'm trying to implement some. The diplomacy seemed to help a lot, especially since I coud end the wars when i wanted to on what terms (usually).
