One-way copy and paste

Hello,

I've got a registered Multiplicity instance installed on two Windows 10 PCs. The primary PC is a corporate laptop with a locked-down firewall that I do not have access to (not Defender).

Mouse and keyboard sharing works well across both computers in most cases (VPN connections can cause connections to renegotiate).

I have an odd situation where clipboard copy and paste of text/images etc. only works in one direction from the secondary PC to the primary PC, but not the other way.

Clearly the primary computer is permitting outgoing connections to the secondary computer as the mouse/keyboard is working fine.

I have turned off the firewall on the secondary PC, but no change.

I don't believe my corporate laptop (primary) restricts outgoing port connections from what I can tell.

I'm already aware of the article, thanks.

I have no control over the firewall on primary computer, however other more complicated functionality appears to work fine, so I'm presuming that ports are opening up OK.

Does pasting on the secondary computer require an incoming connection into the primary?

When a paste operation takes place a connection is made from the machine that needs the data to the machine which has the data. This is because if you have say two secondary machines and copy from one to the other you have no connections between those computers. MP 1.x used to route it all via the primary and the existing ports but this was suboptimal in terms of performance hence the change in later versions.

So if you copy from a primary to a secondary then the secondary connects to the primary for this. This means the Multiplicity ports must be opened on the primary. By default Multiplicity will install suitable rules in the Windows firewall for this, but third party firewalls may require manual configuration.

I'm guessing I'm kind of stuck then as I'm unable to edit the firewall rules on the primary computer and I suspect if there was a way to change the copy/paste port to one that was open, that would foul as the executable name wouldn't match the port rule.

There is a way to change the port MP uses but I don't suspect that will help you as their policy is likely 'close all ports and only open the ones we allow'.
