I can not find any way to select the unrecruited hero in the image below. Everything I try selects the dragon. It doesn't matter where the cursor is, I can not select the hero to recruit him.
Obviously should be addressed, but as a workaround for the game you're in, in the short term, does zoming out to the cloth map help? When it changes to the chess-piece style units, you might be able to select the right one.
can't you spin your map and click from a different angle??

Yes to both. Doesn't make this any less of an issue especially since visually it looks like I should have no reason to NOT be able to click on the space in question.
This sounds similar to an older issue. There were cases when you would try to select something near a mountain and it wouldn't allow you to select it because the mountain was "in the way".
SD updated the dragon animation. I'd speculate that's the cause of the problem. Maybe something where the box to select it doesn't match the model and causes problems on adjacent tiles?
Obviously the answer is to slay the dragon.
