Ive never multiplayered but Im wondering what the strategery is? I hear alot of "eco" terms. Can you give tech away to your allies? BTW I dont even research anything in the diplomacy tree. The AI's just shoot the envoys down.

There are three types of "roles" in MP games, and they are determined entirely by the player start:

  • Eco...this is someone who has no enemies near to them and is protected/buffered by the map setup and/or nearby allies...
  • Frontliner...this is someone who has an enemy on one front and an eco player on the other side (or their back is to a wall due to the map)...
  • Suicide...this is someone who is surrounded by multiple enemy players...

Eco players are supposed to build up their economy quickly so they can feed frontliners and suicide players resources (you need to research 2 techs in diplomacy tree in order to feed)...they should generally neglect fleeting up until the mid-game, by which point they have lots of planets and a very mature economy...in Rebellion, eco players generally get titans and superweapons first....

In some cases, a skilled player who is technically frontliner but is next to a noob enemy may be able to eco...

Some people define "eco" as only those players who focus on economy and feeding other players...by these standards, someone who has no nearby enemies but choses to fleet up early would not technically be playing eco (even though their start lends to playing as eco)...if you go by the more restrictive definition of "eco", then I don't know what you call someone who is in eco "position" but doesn't feed or eco up...pocket player perhaps?  Idk....

You can't give techs to allies, and envoys are rarely used in MP games....

Basically what Selucia said.

Eco is short for Economy - focusing your build around a strong economy before military, and using that economy to support your allies and be able to pump out techs and ships faster come mid-late game.
