Details on what's been going on:

This is the second game that seems to do this to me. The last time there was not a battle which preceded it. In both cases, I have one city and my sovereign is part of an army out exploring. It's always just about 4 technologies in to the total research trees, so not that far but just enough to get rolling (burns!). It's also irrecoverable, as in I can load the saved game and it will happen all over again, there's no chance of continuing the game from what I can see.
