Just ordered a brand new PC today!

Specs:

Case: http://www.labtech.dk/?p=pd&id=RC-912P-KKN1
PSU: http://www.labtech.dk/?p=pd&id=EPS-1000 (Re-used from old PC)
Mobo: http://www.labtech.dk/?p=pd&id=GA-78LMT-S2P
CPU: http://www.labtech.dk/?p=pd&id=FD6100WMGUSBX
Mem: http://www.labtech.dk/?p=pd&id=KVR1333D3N9/4G X2
SSD: http://www.labtech.dk/?p=pd&id=OCZSSD2-1VTXPL120G
GFX: http://www.labtech.dk/?p=pd&id=HD-695X-CDDC (Re-used from old PC)
OS: http://www.labtech.dk/?p=pd&id=GFC-02048

YAY - and then again.. bleh....
Having Win7 installed might just spell the end of skinning for me.... I mainly use/skin RightClick, which is notorious for NOT working right on 64bit systems - specially not Win7. (Spankings to Stardock for not wanting to fix this issue)
I have RightClick working, at the moment on my 64bit Vista which I'm actually not than keen on getting rid of.... but it's been promissed to my girlfriend, and she really needs a PC upgrade - badly! She's currently running Win7 on a box barely suited for WinXP. (Thanks to her "genius know-it-effin-all-about-pcs" ex boyfriend)

I'll show some pics of the new box, as soon as I get it home. I hope it's ready sometime tomorrow.

Nice gear... except that I most likely would have chosen a mobo capable of accepting more than 8gb of RAM.

Other than that, nice choices.

Quoting starkers,

I don't do any video editing/heavy gfx'ing, so I don't need any more RAM.
The 8GB in the new box is 2GB more than I have now.

if it is about using a right-click menu (as your desktop is empty anyways):

use Rainmeter to and create a skin (z-order should be On Desktop) like this:

[Rainmeter]
BackgroundMode=2
SolidColor=00000001

[MeterDockShow]
Meter=Image
X=0
Y=0
W=#SCREENAREAWIDTH#
H=#SCREENAREAHEIGHT#
RightMouseUpAction=!Execute [your command]

your command should be the shortcut to invoke your menu. there are quite a few programs that allow dynamic menus, my fav is this: http://www.desktopapps.co.uk/menuApp.php

Oh well, if you don't need it....

I have 16gb.  It's probably more than I actually need, but I do a bit of video editing/converting, etc, so the extra grunt is there if I happened to need it.

Quoting moshi,
if it is about using a right-click menu

It's all about the right click menu...

If I can't get RightClick to work properly, I will surely take a look at Rainmeter, again.
It's been a while (Read: years) since I've dabbled with it.

in this concept Rainmeter is only used as a layer over the regular desktop (to disable the regular context menu).

the menu is done by menuapp (or whatever you like, i doubt things like PKMenu or ShortPopup still work on Windows 7 though).

Moshi: No, I seriously doubt that Pepijns menu thingy still works. It was made back in the days of/and for XP.
I will, though, have a look at RainMeter. Might spark a new line of skinning for me - again.

Andrew: Nah, it's all out of my hands. If it doesn't work, then it just won't work.
I may just have to go to the US of Hay and spank some sense into Brad....

Am I misreading that or did you give the wrong links?   The CPU is an AMD FX AM3+ socket and the MOBO is only a Phenom II AM3 socket.  To get the most from that system I would want Sata 3 and USB 3.0 too.

Though I'm not that nit-picky, it does say an AM3+ socket mobo on the ordering list - Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P AM3+.
May just be a typo in the specs on the webpage.

Without a doubt, and why not the AMD FX 8 core CPU? The prices aren't that far apart.

No, they are not, but when you have a limited budget you go for the best overall setup.

And now.... Time to shut down the ol' bugger for the last time, and yank out it's 'eyes' (GFX) and 'lungs' (PSU).

Quoting Snowman,
you go for the best overall setup.

And it sounds like a very capable setup at that. 8 cores is probably overkill anyway. If 6 cores won't get it done, 2 more wouldn't help anyhow.

Congrats on your upgrade, Snowman.

Yeah, I just found this at Gigabyte's Site... and the mobo definitely is AM3+ and DDR3 RAM, just not SATA3.

Here we go....
It's finally up an running. CPU got stuck in the mail, and was delivered the day after all the other components.
I was very quick to get it home and get the discs from the old machine put in, and get it booted up....
I fear that I may have to tie it down with some heavy duty straps, at some point.
DAMN, it's fast...

Re-boot time, desktop -> desktop = 55 seconds.....
My old box took 3-5 minutes, just to shut down!

Here are some pics of the beast

Old box on the left. The new box lacks a cardreader and have less USB slots...

With the 'hood' off:

AMD cooler:

Intel cooler.......

Quite a difference, ay?

New box inside fullview:

SSD in the middle, and the two old SATAs on the right.
It's the first time I've seen the PSU mounted at the bottom of the case....

Front mega-fan....

There's also one at the back, just a bit smaller.
This thing might just take off.....

Front view, turned on in the dark. Damn it looks good!

Snowman is a happy camper now!

All the essential apps have been installed, and now I will attempt to get RightClick going.... *crossing fingers*

I think I really like the way that case is laid out, seems like it would be really easy to work on, and with tons of airflow in all the right places.  Odd as it sounds I think I'm slobbering about the case as much as I am the idea of 6 cores...

According to the Cooler Master site page for the case you have, the 3.5" drive cage above where you have your HDD's can either be rotated or completely removed. You should probably do one or the other (if you're not going to be using it) so you can get better airflow. You may also want to get some cable ties, if you don't already have some, so you can tidy your cables out of the way. That will help with airflow, too.

Better airflow = fans not having to run as fast to keep things cool = quieter PC.

Nice rig, Snowy.
