Even though the to hit window displays different stats throwing knives always do 1 damage. At least in my game. Early on I found some throwing knives as loot and used them on a champ. Later on I started building horse units that also had the throwing knives, maybe it's related somehow. Anyway never saw them do more then 1 damage even if it was a company using them.
I think I have gotten up to 6 with one once, but it was with a very late game hero. Usually I expect my late game heros to hit around a 3 or 4 with them. Other than that 1s do seem to be all they hit. That makes them good for times when there is nothing better to do, but not much else.
I;ve had heroes use them and i had designed a unit which carried them too. That particular unit reached level 12 (squad) and still did only 1 damage for the entire squad.
So basicly units equiped with knives always do 1 damage even though the to-hit calculation window says it shoulkd be average 4 per member of that squad.
I think in every game I've played, I've had units using Throwing Knifes. I've used them alot. Both with units and champions. The norm as I've seen it, is that they frequently deal more than 1 damage. Even the weak Bandits that come with the Warlord trait, were dealing 2 damage as level one units against an enemy sovereign.
Hmmm so this might be a bug that is only in my game then... Wierd.
Or it could just be a span of bad RNG (random number generation). And I don't understand how the damage/save calculations work. Like with poison damage. Is good to tell the devs our thoughts and experiences.
I can vouch for the knives periodically doing ~4 damage, but my experience is that they so frequently do 1 damage that the only time I ever use them in on champions who don;t have anything else better to put in a slot, who also don't have a ranged tactical damage spell.
I recently did 3 dmg with them. But usually its only 1
In my latest game, my sovereign was throwing them, and hit several 1s, a 2, a couple of 4s, and one 6! Six is the most I've ever seen.
Edited to add: This was against bandits, their dogs, and spiders.
