Demigod was actually only published by Stardock. It was made by Gas Powered Games (of Dungeon Siege, Supreme Commander, etc), which tends to try a lot of cool things in their games but they've pretty much been all over the place as to how good they actually are as a whole. They didn't really have that kind of hand in development.
That being said, I think the IGN review is fair (which is quite a compliment, as I really don't think very much of IGN's reviewing much of the time), and I appreciate that it doesn't ride the tide of sensationalism that's surrounded the game since release. It's matter-of-fact, unbiased, and relatively well informed. The quote FutileEmotion brought up sums it up best of all, which I think highlights the overall state of the game. It has an excellent, excellent core experience to it; just the stuff draped upon it needs work and polish. Once it gets that work, I can see a prospective score (though Brad doesn't want, understandably, the base game re-reviewed) being far, far higher.
