Dear Stardock,
Like everyone else in the world, I have opinions and comments. I enjoy using your fences program but looking at it and its pro version, I have some suggestions that I would like to say that would make me and others happy.
Now, I would like to make this clear that some of the ideas are not mine, but I just compiled them up to add to my list, also, that this list is in no real order, the numbers are just there to keep track.
So, here it is:
1. (By ScottSummers) Disabling animations - The animation while moving icons around, feels slow, an option to make it sharp and fast would be nice.
2. (By Me) Content display - A whole tab to configure how content is displayed within fences, to be placed aside with the tools, help, about, appearance, and fences tabs. (I’ll add to this one in the following ideas)
3. (By Me) Icon customization – In the Content Display, options to show only the icon, only the text, or both. (Within an individual fence)
4. (By Me) Icon resizing – in Content Display, options to adjust the size of the icons and text. (Within an individual fence)
5. (By Me) Mouse over zoom – In Content Display, your mouse moves over an icon within the set fence, so then the icon along with its text grows to a preset size fence, like object dock’s option but the size of the fence remains the same. Also an option to spread the icons away from the magnified icon or just to overlap. (Within an individual fence)
6. (By hangar-8) All-In-One Fence – The ability to add Gadgets, widgets, docklets, desklets into a fence
7. (By BottleTop) Icon alignment – The ability to adjust the distance from one icon to another within a fence. Example; Icons will be 10 pixels apart vertically and 5 pixels apart horizontality.
8. (By Aredhel) Fences requirement for Internet Access – This shouldn’t be a must, most laptops are offline most of the time and there is always downtime for internet for some ISP’s
9. (By Me) Horizontal scroll bar – You got a vertical one, this is the next step!
10. (By ordegar) Fence Auto Hide - an auto-hide feature that would either make fences hide automatically after a certain amount of time, or hide automatically when I double-click an icon, or both. Double-clicking the desktop would unhide the fences as usual.
11. (By hctopcu) Fence Folders – “I usually download, extract test etc. all my stuff on my desktop. Fences made my life easier. Since none of the fences are real directories, when I try to find something through any other application, I still have some troubles. For example I would like to have a fence showing folder of recently downloaded files. Another temp folder likewise. Can Fences have a feature to display a content of a directory? Another small request: On dragging a file off an explorer window, showing hidden fences would be very nice to directly put it into that fence.”
12. (By GoetzM) One-Click-Activation of objects – “I naturally have several fences on my desktop, one of them is named "Standards". It contains the all-day-used programs such as Firefox, freecommander, david (german outlook), irfanview etc...). I'd like to use this fence in a manner like the quick start area on the task bar of xp. That means, one click with my mouse is enough to start the program. My proposition would be, to add a property dialog to every fence to customize it in the way you can choose whether it's a one- or two-click-fence. That could be accompanied by a little symbol near the fence name, eg a mouse with a number "1".”
13. Lastly, not a feature but a bug/annoyance. I have a fence called adobe than has a lot of icons in it, (I bought adobe CS5 master collection). It is a fat one by the bottom of my screen, it has a scroll bar and only 4 icons are not showing (Which is normal) but when I hold my left mouse button on blank desktop, the 4 icons rearrange themselves in the fence so that they are shown and the replace the 4 icons above them (They revert when I let go). I have 32bit windows vista, this has happened with a few other fences that have scroll bars, I have no control on which fence it effects or which icons are replaced. I dislike this.
14. (By Chikahiro) Mounted drives on desktop – “I use both Windows and OSX, plus have used OS8 and OS9 in the past. One thing I liked about the MacOS' is that upon loading/mounting a drive (USB flash drive, external drive, CD/DVD, network drive, etc.) that an icon would show up for it on the desktop. What I didn't like, however, is you could never choose where they would show up initially - they'd just pop up in the first available spot starting from the top right and going down and to the left from there. Adding that feature (drive icon to desktop) with Fence's organizing (dictating where it would go) would be perfect. At least for me. I'm already using Windowblinds to replicate OS9's window folding (something I miss in OSX). Adding this would be another step in customizing my Windows 7 machine to be exactly how I want it - my favorite parts of Windows and MacOS (Superbar >>> Dock for me).
15. (By Jiffies) Freely move fence label – Force the label on the bottom top left or right
16. (By Jiffies) Custom Scrollbar – make it the same color as fence? (This is coming with themes/skins i suppose?)
17. (By Jiffies) Snap fences – make fences snap to opposite sides as well? (Not just top if fence snap to top of any other stationary fence)
18. (By Jiffies) Custom Snap - Ability to specify a custom snap distance? (To allow a gap between fences if you make the one above)
19. (By Jiffies) For the other 5 of his ideas go here http://forums.impulsedriven.com/378077 . But they are similar to one already mentioned so I just put the link.
20. (By rmanaka) Quick Hide - Similar to "Hide this icon from Fences' quick hide" option, would it be possible to add a "Hide this icon from Fences' transparency (100% opacity)"?
Note: I tried to “clean up” my quoted suggestions to get right to the point, also to fix spelling and grammar errors.
Apologies if this is not the right place to place feature requests, I could not find any better place. (Admittedly i did not look too hard.)
