In the current beta (3A), the research categories for both Kingdoms and Empires are quite similar. Imperium <-> Civilization, Conquest <-> Warfare, and so on for the next 3 categories. Of course, inside each of these categories, Kingdoms and Empires get different technologies, but that doesn't change the fact that what is contained in each of them is pretty much the same. If you want to extract resources or build up your towns, pick the first slot. If you want to create strong armies, pick the second. And so on. I believe that mixing up these categories for the Fallen, would help differentiate how they play compared to Men factions.
As I imagine Fallen to treat warfare as something much more fundamental than Men, they could have military technologies in all of their categories instead of only one of them. Here's an example of categories I would envisage:
Exploitation: Exploiting the world we live in. Contains farming and wood-cutting, but also horseback riding and archery (from hunting). Also include dungeon exploring techs. Shrines could be included here too.
Industry: Building strong stuff. Contains mines and workshops, and most of the weapons and armors (those needing materials). Also include houses and walls.
Deception: Getting things without fighting. That's were diplomacy techs would be. Also include hero recruiting and quests. Spying would be a natural fit too.
Knowledge: Learning how to learn. Not only research buildings (both mundane and magic), but also include most of the magic research, such as new spellbooks. Larger and better trained units would be research here.
Just my 2 cents...
