As I have stated in my previous thread, one of the features that appeales to me in Elemental is that its setting, a barren wasteland sucked of its magic following an immense war of magic. And while the powers that made such a terrible conflict possible are gone, traces of their terrible wills should be evident in the land. For instance, a dead volcano might rise up in the middle of nowhere, or an immense crater might become a lake as it filled with water through the years. These tiles would have not significant effect on the game (apart from being part of the terrain), but would add tantalising hints about the world's past.
Other tiles might not be so passive, however. Perhaps a powerful ice wizard permenantly changed the weather in an area, blocking a river in ice; unnatural winds blow through a canyon, making passage extremely difficult; two ancient undead armies fight each other eternally on the battlefield, tearing each other apart every day, only to rise back when the sun sets. Some of these tiles might require the sovreign to dispell their lingering magic, such as thawing out the magically frozen river in order to open a new trade route.
