whenever I open the game it makes this really high whining noise and it's very annoying the game works fine but no matter what I do the noise is still there its there even if I mute the volume or turn off the speakers, any ideas?
Are you using a CRT? If turning off the speakers doesn't help, it's coming from your system somehow. Best guess is a CRT that's dying and has trouble to handle the resolution, colors or such. Especially likely if launching the game does switch screen resolution.
Could also be the power supply of your machine. I've once had a similar noise after switching OFF the computer, only for a few seconds. Some night, lucky me could not sleep, I heard a loud bang and then some strange sound, as water evaporating rapidly. Went to the computer room and was welcomed by a horrible smell and thick smoke. The power supply simply blew up with some dark liquid dropping from it. The machine was switched off, but computers typically still use a little bit of power in such circumstances.
Until you've found out what's going on, I really recommend to cut the power lines to your hardware when it's unattended.
