I managed to kill a heavily upgraded starbase by planthing a string of gravity mines directly in line with where I was building my own star base. The enemy starbase took about 5 minutes getting to me with the -700% acceleration and max speed inhibition.
It gave me enough time to upgrade my starbase to level 3 guns and reintegration with 1 upgrade in armor. 30 skavaros enforcers also.
You are fully aware that one scout would have countered that tactic. As is said above, AI can be nibbed out in a dozen of ways.
Nerull you were citing a lategame maxtech scenario. People are going to respond accordingly.
Untrue. I, in fact, mentioned a number of times that starbase may show up quite early. I am fully aware that endgame Vasari can jump around that SB. But a 5/8 Starbase will be in the field way sooner than 8-war+5-imperial tech Kostura+PS combo. Every anti-starbase tactic this game can witness will happen way before you see that combo.
Really though, no game with enough economy to support lategame tech and maxed starbases should bog down at a single chokepoint. Even all the smaller maps have multiple routes to the enemy core worlds.
Actually, the random maps happen to give various results. Sometimes no choke is present, but sometimes there is only one way between two nearby homeworlds that doesn't require you to jump as far as the Star's gravwell.
