How do you win ?

I was playing a 3vs3vs3vs1 on a large map the other day, and while I was busy destroying the main fleet of of the AIs, the "You win" screen appeared brutally in my face. Well, yeah, I won! But why ?

I've searched the manual.pdf file that comes with the game, and the word "win" cannot be found inside. "victory" yields one result, doesn't answer the question.

What are the victory conditions in Sins ?

Destroying all enemy colonies. However, a few patches after the manual was printed, IC gave AI the ability to surrender early. A lot of folks were complaining that mop-up takes too long sometimes, so they wanted to cut down on the time a little bit. Long story short, sometimes the AI can surrender when it still has some planets left It doesn't always, depends on a lot of factors (which weren't really explained to us in gory details).
