Odd battle results

Please explain. I still do not understand. I have played this game for a long time and still do not understand how fleet battles work.

This is the situation

My (Yor) Fleet:

1 Heavy fighter, 4 cruisers (fleet 154hp)

Attack: 37 beam, 0 missile, 0 mass driver.

Defense: 5 beam, 5 missile, 61 mass driver.

Thalans fleet:

1 damaged heavy fighter, 3 cuisers, 1 battleship (fleet 151 hp)

Attack: 25 beam, 0 missile, 0 mass driver.

Defense: 40(!) beam, 0 missile, 0 mass driver.

As I see it, my position should be hopeless. My defenses are not suitable against thalans weapons and the Thalans are very heavy defended vs. my choise of weapons. But when the battle plays out not only do I win but none of my cruisers receive any damage at all.

What is this??

Hi!

The TotA shares the same combat model with the DA. In both each weapon on each ship fires separately, and that makes some strange battles.

In your case it's obvious Thalans have weak beams, so they have problems individually punching through your WRONG defenses, and even have problems depleting (removing) your defenses. If you really want to know how combat works, you should check what wiki has to say on GC combat . Just scroll down to Dark Avatar combat changes to get relevant info.

Actually Thalans have better beams than I do ( they have Laser IV while I have Kinetic streasm II, but OK... in both cases the max damage caused by each weapon individualy is 1)

So because I obviousy have a greater number (even if weak) guns, I can penetrate thalans shields.

While thalans cannot penetrate my ARMOR since they have simply too few guns?

Is this correct?

"Fleet combat" is misleading. The attack/defense of a fleet is not what is relevant-it's how it's split up. The ship with the highest attack/(defense + hp) ratio will be targeted first (on each side) until it's dead, by all ships on the opposing side.

So what we have is 37 combined beam attack attacking somewhere between 10 and 20 beam defense (maybe even less). Each weapon fires individually, but defenses deplete during a round and replenish after a round, so you're fairly certain to get through.

On the other side, I can't even begin to extrapolate what your per-ship defense is.

It's somewhat strange that you took no damage whatsoever, but it is by no means impossible, and the Thalans could have certainly gotten some bad rolls. It's more likely, however, that one or more of your ships took combat damage but received sufficient experience to level up, healing their hp.
