The positive value here is that Thulemanden is honestly reporting first impressions of a frustrated new Sins of a Solar Empire player. Probably a lot have the same experience, but do not bother to come to the forums; if they even know where the forums are.
The Sins tutorials could have been much more comprehensive. The manual could also have a Quick Start section with some of the basic strategies for getting started and getting familiar with the game. Or, there could have been a Quick Start Info button for new players in the game itself.
There should have been from the start a carefully commented instructional video on Youtube to show how to get rolling with each of the three factions. Plus a fully commented video on the User Interface. Plus some fully commented replays. And a brief tutorial campaign with onscreen advice would not have been unwelcome.
The strategy here was to stand poolside, show the new swimmers how to swing their arms, advise them to kick their feet as well, and warn them to get their nose up from time to time to take a breath. Mumble indistinctly about it not being that hard, really. Then throw them in the deep end. Ignore their screams of horror and burblings while you go off to get a cup of coffee.
By way of contrast (hopefully), I am looking forward to seeing how Blizzard deals with the tutorial and training aspects of StarCraft 2. Those of us have played SC off and on over the years find it all obvious, of course. Just learn the new key bindings. Experiment with the new units. But players new to the SC world and perhaps even RTS who have been lured into the SC2 maelstrom by reading the hype are going to have a tough time without a lot of help.
