I'm a big fan of how Teamfortress 2 does it, with integrated voice chat simply by holding the V key. I'm not so much a fan when servers set it to be universal instead of team based, which tends to cause chat to degenerate into a bunch of idiots smack talking toward each other (with the only real result being a complete breakdown of tactics and the effective demonstration of the participants' lack of IQ). However, when it works properly (ie when limited by team) it is a wonderful tool, and the ease of using it is just wonderful.
However, if there isn't enough demand for it then by all means use the resources that would have gone into implementing integrated VOIP to make more/better demigods, more/better/different maps, etc.
I agree. I think in a game that requires team tactics and coordination, speaking among you team is essential. To me it seems almost unbelievable not to have voice chat integrated, but I am spoiled by steam voice chat. I think it is really important for team chat in this game if you really want it to suceed. It increases the attachment to the team and makes the game a more social experience that people then become more attached to. This is in addition to how invaluable it can be to team tactics.
I would like to see it added or have a system were teams can know how to contact each other via a third party software. To me this is a much important feature.
