By Posted June 19, 2008 10:02:34

I've just downloaded impulse and it says it needs to download aan update. Unfortunately is says "Downloading impulse update-Connecting........" and then it just does nothing, so I can't update any of my software.  Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried closing Impulse and opening it again?  Sometimes network connections can drop right when Impulse is opening which causes this problem.  We are looking at ways of trying again after so many seconds of sitting in the "connecting..." phase now.

One thing I've noticed is Impulse really didn't like my Propel Accelerator. Once I disabled the proxy in the Impulse options everything worked great.

Don't know if it's relevant, but don't know that it isn't either. Plenty of dialup ISPs offer accelerator apps.

I'm having the same issue (except I'm not using any proxy).

Impulse does logging in, retrieving latest information, validating registrations and then it just sits at Downloading Impulse update- Connecting............

Its been like this for over 45mins already and still sitting at connecting...

I don't have a firewall blocking it, I'm not using any proxies etc..

Everything else works fine (can use the browser, store, forums etc thru Impulse ...no issues)

Can't connect to download updates to my games (Not showing GalCivII TOA installed , listed as available tho so I was going to reinstall)

Also shows an update for GalCivII-DA (I have v1.80g.100 installed and Impulse shows a v1.80g.103 available)....can't download while it says Impulse still connecting....

GalCiv DreadLords and SINS shows as installed and correct versions in Impulse just fine...no issue.

Tried loading up Stardock Central and it works just fine...except there it doesn't show any available updates for GalCiv-DA and SDC shows that TOA is installed but doesn't have any updates available to download.

My question is basically...WTF? Pardon my expression, but I don't like wasting my time. TOA shows installed in SDC, not in Impulse. Impulse shows updates available for DA and TOA and SDC doesn't have them available, and then the issue with Impulse just sitting at Downloading Impulse update- Connecting............

This is really beginning to aggravate me.

Any Solution? How about putting the updates for the games on SDC so I can at least get them from there while you fix this issue?

Edit to add: And might I suggest some sort of visual bar indicator when it tries to connect and maybe an automatic timeout feature to restart...as it is now...there is zero indication if it is actually trying to connect or is just frozen and its obviously not timing out or retrying.

Regards.

Have you disabled the BITS service?
June 20, 2008 08:20:00
I opened the Impulse Dock then the updater started working, dont know if this helps but it cant hurt.
June 20, 2008 08:46:18
i tried opening the dock - still stuck on "connecting" how do i install the products ive paid for and get the updates for the few products i already have installed while this problem persists???? can i still use the central program like i used to? as this used to work no problems - if so where can i get it and if not can someone point me to anther method of getting installers and updates

please please please!!

Check to see if the BITS service is enabled.
Check to see that .net 2.0 framework is installed
Check to make sure your firewall is allowing access.

What is the problem with this tool??? I've the same issue trying to update Galciv2 Twilight. I can't even count the numbers I restarted Impulse. Every single time it hangs at this message. I cleared the data folder, tried to reinstall Impulse but nothing.

BITS is running (even tried to restart the sevice), NET Frameworks are there (all of em) and I even deactivated the firewall. Nothing.

Honestly, this is crap. SDC may have been ugly but it worked. This flashy colorfuly pile of junk does not do the most basic tasks right. I'm already sick of it. I'll not throw anymore money down the Stardock drain. Sorry, that's it for me.

"... with no discs or other hassles" - The best joke in years. You know how long it would take me to put a disc in? Now gues how long it already took me to get this crap running.

Sorry for my words but I'm so angry atm...

Are you running through a proxy?
June 20, 2008 12:23:43
im using vista 32bit connected via ethernet to my netgear router, im using mcafee and have allowed all impulse and stardock programs full access. I dont wanna sound like a complete idiot but what exactly is BITS in all my years of using windows ive never come across the term b4.......is impulse only meant to be used by IT professionals? or the general public who have paid for the products and simply want access to them?

this is rediculous.....is my 12 month subscription on hold while i cant access the programs? i suspect not.........will i be giving stardock anymore of my hard earned.......i suspect not

BITS is the transfer service used by Windows Update to improve data transfer.

Please contact support@stardock.com if you have further questions.
June 20, 2008 12:36:08
Background Intelligent Transfer Service is set to automatic delayed and the status is started

I have sent an email to stardock support as u suggested, but i really did think the SUPPORT forums for IMPULSE would be the ideal place to get help with my IMPULSE SUPPORT questions

Well, it still does not work. And no, I'm not running through a proxy. And it worked once two days ago but never since. It simply does not pass that message anymore, not matter what I do or how often I reinstall.

Does Stardock have a refund policy for such a case? After all I can't download the games I paid for because of the new crappy system put in place...

contact support.  If they can't help you a refund should be available.

What is the problem with this tool???

The basic problem with this tool is:
#1 It is using a Web Service back-end instead of a simple web page/file download interface like most other apps around the web, and especially like Stardock Central does.

#2 It, while claiming to be proxy-aware, does not appear to actually be able to download any files if you are behind a proxy.

Why does everyone else have so many issues with Impulse when it's run like a charm for me?

Either (a) You are one of the lucky ones, or (b) Maybe you aren't trying to run it on a PC that is behind a proxy firewall?
June 20, 2008 19:32:51
Ok, I am not running behind a proxy or a firewall, and I just disabled the Bits service, to no avail. I've tried downloading the "full" version of impulse directly, which I would hope would include all relevant updates that it is searching for, but that link seems to be broken.

Is there a way to download the Entire impulse package somewhere (or solve this downloading problem), so that I could install TPM 2008, which I bought and would very much like to play.

annnndddd I try and install the new .net framework and guess, what, they GIVE ME A LITTLE FILE AND THEN TRY TO CONNECT THROUGH THE INSTALLER TO GET THE REST

STOP DOING THAT. GIVE ME THE ENTIRE DAMN FILE TO DIRECTLY DOWNLOAD

We have been able to reproduce this issue in our labs.  That is not a fix, but it is good news as we can now narrow down the source.  Please stay tuned, we are on the case.  Thank you for reporting the issue.

We hear you and others making this request.  We put up the Full Impulse installer on our http://www.impulsedriven.com/about.asp

It is down a little on the page it is on the right.

June 20, 2008 21:34:40

TOA shows installed in SDC, not in Impulse.

This issue has been resolved with the latest version of Impulse.

#2 It, while claiming to be proxy-aware, does not appear to actually be able to download any files if you are behind a proxy.

This is not 100% accurate.  If the proxy settings are correctly configured, Impulse does download from behind a Proxy server.

The full download file has not been working for me for the last two days - has anyone gotten it to work?
June 21, 2008 00:55:46
Since the launch the full download is no longer available. If you need to get the latest version you can now do it through Impulsedriven.com.
