Downloading files with Impulse

By Posted June 3, 2008 18:27:58
When we download files with Impulse, where are they stored? In which file in our computers? Maybe, there should be a place that states exactly where they are downloaded to so we can quickly locate them for storage...

Click on Stardock Logo in the top left. From there click preferances > folders. From there you can set them up to go where ever you like.

Thanks a lot Seabass. I was having problems with Impulse and was already cursing you all to hell for belonging to the Dump-Everything-To-C-And-Ignore-Env-Variables crowd. Luckily it's not quite that bad

This needs to be a lot more visible than that, though. On my Windows machines, general programs and the OS are on separate partitions (with %TMP%/%TEMP% being set accordingly) and I was unable to download anything due to space restrictions. With the above info, I could change this, so things should work now.

Also, I find it odd that you cannot just download a file without accompanying installation. That would have been a workaround for the above problem and also in line with the EULA.

I think you should tinker with things more. It's amazing the options some programs have.

There is a download and archive option, available if you right-click on a item that you haven't instaleld yet

For some reason, the archive folder is always empty - even though the selection "Archive applications before updating" has been ticked. Can't figure... And yes, the initial post was not about "where to install" - it was about the downloaded file storage. Where are the downloaded files? For example, when I do re-formats on my hard drive, I need access to those "downloaded" files for new installations. Why do I have to re-download everytime? What's the point?

The downloaded files are not kept on the system after they have been installed.  Since many of the files (especially the games) can be quite large they are removed. Plus the next time you go to install, it may not be the most recent version that is available so there would be a risk of that file being out of date.

However, you do have the option of Archiving an application.  So when you are reinstalling your OS you can just restore the archive.

At this moment, the command to open the archive folder is pointing to the wrong location.  Under preferences (in the Stardock Orb) select Prefences and then chose the "Folders" settings.  There you will see the correct location for the Archive File Location.  We should have this fixed in the next build of Impulse.
