Fleet leader question

So I've been playing the game for a few days and I'm starting to get the hang of the game, but when I put together my fleets, I don't really understand the differances between two capital ships as fleet leaders.

I play TEC and use a sova as my flag ship, if any of that matters.

There's no real difference to which ship is your fleet leader. It doesn't even have to be a capital ship, though most use one because they last longer and it's just logical The fleet leader is really for easier control management, since you can just order it around and the fleet ships will follow it and try to do what they do best, etc.

anyone know how to set the fleet ship? I try to create a fleet and some small ship is the fleet ship instead of my capital ship. How do I set it?

Fleet management as it is now is pretty difficult and needs more options. For real we need some options to select and individual ship in the fleet to be the leader, we need an option to add ships to a fleet with out having to auto join them or recreate the whole entire fleet to add that ship. we also need some better formations something like wedge formation instead of the Standard box or death.

The fleet leader is always the primary selection (the ship with the brighter white box). You can use tab to cycle through the ships to get the one you want, or select that one first and shift-select the rest.

To create a custom fleet with all the ships you want just left click and drag to select all the ships you want to be apart of that fleet. Then click create fleet.

If you want a specific unit to be the fleet leader, cycle through the units you selected using the tab key until the one you want is highlighted in a lighter-white/gray color. Then click create fleet.

As for other formations, I agree we need more options.

The only instance I know of that is affected by fleet leader is if the leader is a colony capital ship and you send the fleet to a neutral world. Usually not a big deal, but if the neutral well still has local militia or enemy ships, the fleet will attempt to colonize the planet before taking care of the enemy ships. Obviously, only applicable when colonize is set to autocast. If you're REALLY unlucky the one seige frigate usually present at the start of the game on neutral wells could take out your new formed colony.
