Yes it's dumb, you're stupid as hell!
Na seriously i had no idea what the problem was too until i found in the interface settings the topic "Team colours"(or something like that). Remove the check form the box, done!
But i think you can select a new colour only in a new game.
In you're
/Windows folder is a file named colors.color . open it with a notepad an you can change your playercolor anytime you want.(Those are hex-color-codes, just google for it.)
