Lag - Where from?

Hey all.

I am not a pc guru i'm afraid...familiar with some of the terminology and stuff...the PC I have is one a friend helped me build and I thought it was pretty good so I was awfully surprised when I encountered lag during a sizable battle and I'm not sure where it was coming from. There were probably only about 200, maybe a bit more, ships (which seems kinda small compared to what some of what I'm reading here). Not sure if it is lag because of my cpu or because of my video card, or because of my ram.

Specs:
Intel Core 2 Quad cpu q6600 @ 2.4 ghz
2 megs of ram (I don't know which it is, I was told it was fast at the time I bought it...800 or something...)
Nvidia 8800gtx OC
Vista 32bit

Now, I'm not a huge gamer, but I thought this rig could handle most of what is currently out there (hehe...I play a lot, just not a lot of different games) but then again...what do I know.

Or...was it simply just a really big battle in reality...

Any help would be appreciated.

p.s., apologise in advance if this triple posts...it's happened before and I have no idea why...

p.p.s. I understand there's a fair bit of room to overclock my cpu...is this correct?

You have all settings on highest I take it? Try turning the bumpmaps down to just High, and see if that makes a difference.

Well i overclocked my intel core 2 duo 6600 from 2.4ghz to 3.2ghz and it helped, allot.

What i read on this forum is that this game uses only 1 cpu core most of the time.

So having a quadcore with low/average ghz speed on your side isnt much help, at least when u want to play this game on highest with 500+ units on screen zoomed in.

Thanks for the replies. I did turn down the bump and it seemed to make a difference. But, that would suggest the lag is the result of my vcard capacity (would it not?) which I find a little upsetting considering what I paid for that damned thing lol. Anyhow, I also have the feeling it could be a cpu thing...time for a new case lol.

I had issues with large battles until i noticed space debris was causing huge slowdown. I left everything else maxed and turned off debris (pieces of ships that have blown up) and the hugest battles run fine. And my GPU is dwarfed by yours, so...
