Frame rate dives... Buggy tutorial

Zotac 512MB 8800GTS @ 740/1030
2GB Gskill @ 239MHZ
Creative Labs XFI , Creative 4.1
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB SATA2

Everything on highest...


When i first tried the tutorial i didn't get any messages and nothing else was going on , couldn't move any ships out. Retried the tutorial and it worked but every so often when a message popped up the frame rates would dive to about 20-30fps.. Click OK on the message and frame rates back up. The frame rate drop outs also happened sometimes in the main game aswell , however you could go back to the area of the frame rate drop and it'd be ok.. Frame rates drop then quickly recover , vsync is off Application AA/AF.

I have the same problem with basiclly the same computer setting and the same graphics settings.

I have lowered them and it doesnt seem to help much or anything frame rate preformance still seems to randomly decline.

30 fps is still pretty good for me...

I for some reason can't get the tutorial to work at all.

No messages show up.

Maybe but not when its doing 60 , then suddenly 25 then right back upto 60 it does look as if its going in slowmo compared to 60 again vsync is off... Seems no reason for it , move the area back to where it did the dip and it didn't do it again.

That's the nature of vsync... it sounds like you have it enabled... Vsync forces the video card to output the frames at either 30 or 60 FPS with nothing in between to meet the normal refresh rate of 60hz monitors... If the card encounters something that causes it to dip below 60fps, it drops it to 30fps... This eliminates tearing of the image but causes framerate jitters from time to time.

I know what it does , but even if it was on... It shouldn't dive to 20fps !

Yes it should, thats how vsync works. Its all multiples of your 60 divided by 2 each time. You can fix this by turning on triple buffering or turning off vsync.
