All I want is the ability to disable the speed restriction event. I'm fine with the JK taking half my planets, I'm fine with the Peacekeepers showing up with fleets of 20 ships packing 400 attack/1400 defense a piece (that specific example actually happened in one of my games, and I just so happened to be massively in debt at the time, too), I'm fine with mega pirates, I'm fine with the Dread Lords showing up again in my current game, after the AI has killed them once, I'm fine with the AI touching the Telenanth; he can have those +600% (eventually) bonuses-I don't NEED them.
What I -need- is to not have an artificial restriction on speed to 5 parsecs a week that, due to the fact I have all engine techs, have chosen +1 or +2 speed in racial abilities, and have had the ultradrive event happen, makes my default 12 speed no engine ships crawl at a snail's pace, and my ~50 speed ships (or, more commonly, 30 speed) move, comparatively, at a glacial pace.
In fact, the speed restriction event actually PROMOTES slapping MORE engines on a ship, because I have full moves the turn I build it, but ONLY that turn! So I'm better off building a ship and filling it with engines to get it to the front lines, or just short of it, and then upgrading it to a battleship when it gets there-because it will get there FASTER! And man, have you SEEN the speed of a huge hull all-engine ship?
I have to say, again, speed would work out so much better if engines worked like mining/constructor/spore modules...only one per ship. Given, the values for speed would need to be changed rather drastically, and even in the best compromise it could take a significant amount of turns to traverse a gigantic map, and even worse for TA's immense-but isn't that what gigantic is supposed to be?
