Tech'ing out Spore Ships....recommended?

I'm curious as to opinions on the Korath Spore Ships. It seems to me there should be some way, through research, to defend against germ warfare attacks on a colony, like espionage, rather than tracking and shooting down Spore Ships. Even if it cost a lot, it seems this would balance out the game better. Am I wrong? Curious as to opinions.

Spore Ships are the nuclear option of Gal Civ II. There is no real way to defend against nukes in the real world except shooting them down, and if even one gets through, you're screwed. I think they're fine as is, since the tech is so expensive and you give up substantial bonuses in other fields with other super abilities to get them.

I agree, the spore ships are fine as it.

I guess you're right, maybe. But in the real world I would use a gas mask against germ warfare.... I'm beating the Korath right now anyway (in normal) .

You can use spore ships to your advantage if you're playing against Korath. Make sure all planets but one deep inside your territory have ships in orbit.
With a high probability, that planet will attract spore ships. A single fast ship should be enough to take them out.

Problem is they may not be inhalation spores, but simply contact spores. This means enviromental suits and all that entails.

Keep in mind also that Spore Ships turn a world Toxic, which implies that they also attack the local biosphere, implying a wide-spectrum biological agent that can attack almost any living creature and gives off toxic gas as a waste product, so if you're not infected, you'll probably starve to death. . . nasty weapon.

Yeah that tends to be the problem with biologicals, they get EVERYWHERE.

Next time the Korath come up (I set to random opponents), I'll try to set a Spore 'Lure'...sounds fun. Hey, I'm semi-retired, but have been a gamer since the beginning of gaming time, and have been playing GalCiv nearly non-stop for 5 weeks. I do have to sleep and eat sometimes. It's warping my mind. I'm gonna have to switch over to Heroes V for a while guys See ya in a few. Thanks for the comments muchachos.

Another tactic I use against spore ships, for when they *do* get through and capture one of my planets: I have what I call "commando" ships ready nearby to recapture. These are cheap invasion ships (smallest hull and invasion module, no propulsion). After the spore attack, the Korath population is extremely low, making for an easy recapture. I also console myself with the fact that this often means getting a tech from the Korath, too.

You can also do this right after the Korath spore-capture a planet from someone else, which works out just fine for you.

What is a spore ship anyway i just got the expansion pack and my computer dosen't run adobbe that well so i cant read it off of that

It's a suck-*ss Korath ship that can take an undefended planet without a ground battle.....grrrrrr......

And even if you DID survive the spores, and the shortages of food and what have you not... You are now faced with a conquering army which landed immediately after and took over the colony. The few survivors would go undercover or get caught and killed, either way the colony is theirs now.

From playing against the dread lords and winning, the way to deal with such an enemy is to research heavily into engines, and get eyes of the universe. With 15 view you can see anything comming, and a medium ship with hyperwarp III engines and ONE lazer5 can easily go at speeds of close to 15.

So you just snipe them.

Strangely, it doesn't make sense that the spore weapons affect mechanical creatures like the Yor and Dark Yor. Do these spores also corrode away at metal?

And why don't they just use massive orbital nuclear detonation? The fallout would kill everyone anyway and wreck all electronic/digital systems on the planet.
