Systems as Separate Entities
I am not sure if it has been talked about previously but I think that an area in which Gal Civ 2 currently lacks is the complexity of star systems. I would like to see star systems implemented as separate elements to "surrounding space", i.e. ships would have to enter star systems and a separate screen be displayed for the star system rather like MOO3 but with some significant changes…
1. It would enable more complex star systems, such as binary and trinary stars (which are pretty common in the real universe).
2. You could then have "habitable" zones depending on race picks
3. Orbital bodies that are not necessarily good for populating but my have rare minerals or trade goods (as a replacement to resources)
4. Depending on the complexity that you wanted to develop these systems to you could have strategic placement of starbase for defence and trade and mining starbase for resource collection.
5. It would increase the strategic nature of "system" invasion, do you defend planets or the whole system or your strategic resources etc…
Changes to Influence / Area of Control / Diplomacy
The implementation of star systems as separate entities could add whole new aspects to the game. With area of control star systems could be under several states for example:
1. Wholly own – you control all the planets in the system (or are the dominant influence say controlling 75% of the star system influence
2. Disputed – No one race controls 75% of influence
3. Uncontrolled – exactly what it says on the tin
The area around star systems would be controlled depending on influence as it is now; the space is "recognised" to be owned by that race.
Diplomatic Options (For wholly owned systems):
1. Right of Passage – Other races are allowed to move through your "recognised space" with non combatant vessels.
2. Trading Treaty – Other races are allowed to enter your star systems with trading vessels
3. Non – Aggression Treaty - Other races warships may move through your "Recognised Space"
4. Re-Supply & Logistics – Other races ships can move freely in and out of your star systems and "recognised space" and may use your starbase and planetary facilities
5. Alliance Treaty – Same as above but ships will provide military support when required, your starbases modules will effect other races ships
Where as system is not under direct control of a particular race you may move freely however other options such as space pirates could be implemented as the system is not controlled by anyone and there is lack of government etc… this could also have negative effects on planets within those systems.
Other expansions on this idea could include diplomacy options where races give up rights on systems, for example you have a system with 2 planets in controlled by race A and B… Race B gives up the rights to that system (at a cost) and the system is now "owned" by race A.
I am sure that there are many other "ideas" that could be implemented of this one, just something I thought I would throw into the arena and see what people thought.
