Decline without falling

Currently when a civ declines it almost never recovers ie few planets = poor tech, poor econ etc. How about:

When a civilisation is on the verge of being wiped out or sverely declining there could be a possible event that overthrows the current leader and creates an evil dictatorship. The dictator would have a number of special military and economic powers such as forced labour, suicide ships etc that would make the last few planets much harder to wipe out. If the civilisation recovers then the original leader who had managed to escape into exile might be reelected.

You could possibly implement this kind of thing as an option but, assuming that it was used by both you and the AI, wouldn't that make it much harder to "break the enemy's back?" If you can deliver a decisive punch to to your opponent (or if your AI opponent has done the same thing to you), why would you want the victim to be given a bonus? One of the real skills in any game like this is building up an empire that doesn't fall victim rapidly to an outside attack. Ideally, you should have reserves that are ready to respond to an outside threat and/or be able to focus on military production to generate extra ships to fight back or go to your allies and plead with them to help you. That's part of the fun of games like this.

When you can bounce back without needing help from "deus ex machina" game mechanics, isn't that more satisfying?

I think he's talking about something to help out AI civs that are weakened, not to help out the player. And the bonus would go away again later, so they wouldn't just bounce back to be even more powerful than before. As it is, if an AI is weakened early on, they can be safely ignored for the rest of the game.



There are already some events that help out civs that are weakened (finding a precursor ship for instance).

really, learning how to use forums like a grown-up isn't that hard, is it?

pffft. anyway, back on topic,,,

yeah, it would be cool if hopeless empires could go out in a blaze of glory, instead of just hanging around as fodder for expansionistic neighbors!

it shouldn't happen all the time, of course, not to every failed empire... but having it as an random event that takes the weakest player in the game and pumps them up?

Since Froggy has much better things to do that to lower himself to your level, which is so far down that you can tell how hot the core is, I'd reply to you so your not so lonely because you obviously are seeking attention.

So Psycho please enlight us on your accomplishments to the world since you say Stardock is talentless. What games have you wrote? Please let's hear your truth? Can I order a tin foiled hat to match yours?

Boy Psycho get a life.

I apologize to anyone else reading this but I would rather have Stardock working on games than replying to this piece of garbage.

I think there's that event that slowly increases the bonuses of the civ each turn. That only happens to small civs (AFAIK).

Normally that tends to be a curse in disguise, since I then make it my very next move to wipe them from existence.

I think that there should be a chance that when an empire colapses, it spawns pirates which would be the rogue leaders of the doomed race's military. that would be fun. They could also occur frequently in war zones, giving a nice "I just destabilized the galaxy" feel.

Yes - I think at present there is too much of a challenge hump - when u get over the hump the challenge disapears and the rest of the game tends to be just cleaning up weakened AIs - the issue is no longer in doubt but it can take a long time to conclude. Also the idea isn't really just a "deus ex machina" you just have to look at how weak civilisations are able to threaten us today. For instance the situation in the middle east immediately comes to mind and the Falklands conflict was arguably triggered by Galtieri being in the same situation that the AIs get into....

also, slightly off topic i know, but why are planets so worthless, i mean, 200 bc for my class 15 homeplanet??? (obviously i didn't sell it , just curious),

back on topic: what is this bonus you speak of, and perhaps when a civ is about to 'die' they could drag someone else into the fued, or i like the pirate idea

I like the fact that they often surrender to another party. Now if they were choosier about who they surrendered to and maybe only chose the 2nd largest/strongest civ then it would enhance the game for me. I think the AI should form alliances more often too so that you have to think twice before attacking another civ because you are gonna get a two for one at least when you start a war.
