I was thinking about how much a pain in the butt fitting ships with life support is and came up with an idea that has probably been reported on some level or another befor..
Carriers..
Or at least like a fueling module that you can place on cargo hulls or something.. Just to be able to get the smaller ships to the battle more easily. Perhaps if you put more of the module on the 'carrier' then you can support more logistics or something like that.
