This thought has occured to me before, and I haven't seen anyone else right about it, so I thought I'd see if anyone else was of the same opinion, and then find out from Stardock how hard it would be to add this feature:
A mini-map position locator on the planet-screen.
Maybe I'm lazy, or maybe I'm just not attentive enough to be playing GCII, but I am invariably looking at a planet screen, either trying to decide what to build on the surface, or, more importantly, trying to decide what to build in the starport - and I find myself confused by the fact that I can't remember precisely where the star system is or what its tactical/strategic position is in my empire.
I would love it if the planet, or more improtantly, the Starport construction page, would show me a small minimap with the planet (or at least the star system) I am looking at highlighted. I get confused by the relatively similar names of some of the systems, and after I have been playing for a while I start to forget what is exactly going on where (this also occurs a lot when I go away from a game for a little while and then restart it from a save).
If I could see a mini-map, it would be much easier for me to say "Oh, yeah. I'm close to the Drengin with this planet, and my relations with them are deteriorating - I better start building defenses."
I know that there are a lot of work arounds to this problem (like write down all of my planets and their locations - or drop out of the planet/starport build screens into the main map and then go back to the planet to tell it what to build), but I tend to use the GNN updates to alert me to each project completion and help manage planet construction, and dropping out to the main map means that I often have to write down four or five planets and project statii and then locate and re-enter those star systems with new build orders.
Does anybody know if there is a better way to manage this, or if there is a way that a mini-map could be added to the planet/starport build screens?
